Improving the efficiency in hill ewes for a better climate
Abstract
Livestock production in the hills could be improved in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions through increased efficiency (output per animal). Research conducted at the Scotland’s Rural College Hill and Mountain Research Centre, Kirkton and Auchtertyre farms is investigating ways of improving efficiency and farm management, using a Precision Livestock Farming approach, based on the use of individual electronic identification of the animals. Three main elements of this management approach are being investigated: winter feeding of the animals, worming of the lambs and longevity of the flock. Although not all results are yet available in this on-going research, preliminary results suggest that up to 31% of the amount of wormer could be saved using a PLF approach. Although further economic, performance and labour results have yet to be finalised, it is expected that this PLF management will help improve efficiency of hill systems.
